The U.N. Department of Economic and Social Affairs states that 68 percent of the world\u2019s population will live in cities over the coming decades up from 55 percent today.<sup>1<\/sup> As cities grow, congestion will get worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Moscow, Russia, the average driver spends 210 hours a year waiting in traffic, while in Mexico City, Mexico, the average driver spends 218 a year in traffic. Data from each element\u2014vehicles, traffic signals, people, roads, and maps\u2014is collected, combined, and analyzed to optimize the flow of vehicles in the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If we drill down on how cities are using smart mobility to reduce traffic congestion today, we see best practices emerge. Let\u2019s look at six key items that cities should embrace to enable smart mobility solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"1-connected-infrastructure-as-smart-mobility-solution\">1. Connected infrastructure as smart mobility solution<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One criterion required to enable smart mobility to reduce traffic congestion is connected infrastructure. The different parts of a city\u2019s transportation system need to be connected to the cloud: traffic lights, cars, buses, trains, bikes, people, maps, and even roads. This Internet of Things (IoT) approach allows location, speed, capacity, and other data to be collected, stored, and analyzed. Wilson Parking recently <a href=\"https:\/\/news.microsoft.com\/apac\/features\/traffic-and-azure-drive-across-the-worlds-longest-sea-bridge-and-park-with-help-from-the-cloud\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">invested in connected infrastructure<\/a> to decrease congestion for drivers using the new Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge. Access to data for a collaborative urban mobility solution<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Another criterion is access to data. Cities continuously collect and produce large quantities of data for planning, production, and decision-making. Sharing this data with the private sector can help accelerate smart mobility solutions. The City of Denver creates a holistic data environment that brings together data from multiple siloed sources to meet its smart mobility goals. Helsinki, Finland, opened access to city <a href=\"https:\/\/hri.fi\/en_gb\/hri-service\/what-is-hri\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GIS transportation data<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"3-diverse-alternative-transportation-to-enhance-mobility\">3. Diverse alternative transportation to enhance mobility<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A third criterion is offering compelling options to the \u201cone car, one driver\u201d model. For smart mobility, alternative options would need to be connected to the cloud:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bicycle commuting: ideal for commutes of a few miles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Carsharing: rent cars by the minute or by the hour<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ridesharing (carpooling): make use of the empty seats already in the system<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On-demand ride services: use personal vehicles to offer transportation services<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Buses and trains: reimagining existing transportation by integrating them into end-to-end trip plans, including how to travel the last mile home<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"4-autonomous-vehicles-and-their-role-in-reducing-traffic-congestion\">4. Autonomous vehicles and their role in reducing traffic congestion<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A fourth criterion required to enable smart mobility to reduce traffic congestion is the evolution of autonomous vehicles. While still in development, autonomous vehicles are cars or trucks in which human drivers are not required. These vehicles use sensors and software to control, navigate, and drive the vehicle. The use of autonomous vehicles to reduce traffic congestion depends on public policy. Effective traffic management for improving congestion control<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Traffic management is ultimately at the heart of reducing congestion.\u00a0 The new Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau bridge is a modern-day marvel that has forever changed traffic patterns across one of Asia\u2019s fast-growing areas. Recent estimates say daily volume on the world\u2019s longest sea bridge will reach 29,100 vehicles by 2030 and 42,000 vehicles by 2037. Wilson Parking enables drivers to pre-book spaces on the bridge, resulting in smoother traffic flows. The vision of Mobility as a Service is to make it easier and less expensive for car drivers and passengers to travel via alternative forms of transportation. Mobility as a Service applications enable travelers to plan trips based on their priorities and preferences.\u00a0Microsoft is working with companies like <a href=\"https:\/\/news.microsoft.com\/transform\/moovit-helps-people-disabilities-ride-transit-confidence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Moovit<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/news.microsoft.com\/2019\/02\/04\/tomtom-expands-partnership-with-microsoft-to-power-microsoft-cloud-offerings-with-location-based-services\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TomTom<\/a> to offer critical real-time data to Mobility as a Service application providers, enabling them to deliver compelling applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"learn-more-with-microsoft\">Learn more with Microsoft<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>By connecting traffic lights, vehicles, people, and roads to the cloud, sharing data, embracing alternative modes of transportation, and building traffic management systems, cities like Hong Kong, Taipei, and Denver are experiencing success and leading the way for other cities. As travelers <a href=\"https:\/\/newed.any0.dpdns.org\/en-us\/industry\/blog\/manufacturing-and-mobility\/2022\/01\/04\/pave-the-way-for-a-sustainable-future-with-data-and-smart-mobility-solutions\/\">adopt Mobility as a Service applications<\/a>, they will increasingly choose mass transit options over driving on their own.
