data-contrast=\"auto\">r design tattoos, they also\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">by necessity<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">wear many hats<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to keep their business runnin<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">g&#8211;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0bookkeeper, customer service agent,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">procurement specialist, sales manager, social media planner, HR manager, and IT specialist, just to name a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">few<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Our<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0UX content\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">writing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">team<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0w<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">anted to understand\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">how\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">very small<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0business (VSB) customers\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">approach\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">their IT tasks<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, specifically those in M<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">icrosoft\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">365\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">dmin\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">enter<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0(MAC)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(VSBs are classified as organizations with <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">fewer\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">than\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">10<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">users<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.)\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">dmin\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">enter is a portal for\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">anyone who\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0managing\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Microsoft 365<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0subscription for their organization<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">t&#8217;s important<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0that all users of the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">admin center <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">achieve their business goals (<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">for example<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, adding a new user)\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">as productively\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">as possible<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. T<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">he language<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0within the user experience (UX)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0is\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">key to supporting that.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We also want users to feel confident as they\u2019re using\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the admin\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">center<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. This confidence is\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">essential<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in supporting our team\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">objectives<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, including\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Net<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Promoter Score (NPS) and overall customer satisfaction (SAT).\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Our hypothesis was that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">T terminology would largely be\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">unfamiliar<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">VSB<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0admin<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, impeding\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">their a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">bility to complete tasks efficiently<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">nd reducing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0their\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">con<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">fidence and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">satisfaction in using\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">dmin\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">enter<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We wanted to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">thorough<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ly\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">test<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0that hypothesis,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">check our biases,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">understand wh<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ich specific<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0terms were not intuitive, and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">identify\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">what alternatives would work better<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0for them.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">U<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ser research can be a valuable tool\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0understanding the language preferences of a particular group<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">customers<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">M<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">y<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0colleagues and I explained our approach<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to this research<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/newed.any0.dpdns.org\/en-us\/research\/group\/customer-insights-research\/articles\/stop-making-assumptions-about-language-how-user-research-can-support-better-language\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">this p<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">revious\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">blog post<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One aspect of that post is worth revisiting here<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0as these were the driving principles behind the VSB research<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Five things language can do as part of UX\u00a0design\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Support ease of use<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Consistent terminology, style, and content patterns create\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a user interface (<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">UI<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">that<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2018<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s scannable and predictable.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"134233279\":true,\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Add clarity and readability<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Plain, descriptive language makes what we\u2019re saying clear and easy to read. Plain language means using words that are in most people\u2019s common vocabulary or that are in the vernacular for your audience. It means not making up a new term for a feature or functionality if we can use a common word to identify it and a description to clarify what it does or means.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"134233279\":true,\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Create an information scent that supports wayfinding<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Language guides customers with structure (<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">such as grouping\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and ordering information)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and labeling that matches how customers think about a task or activity.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"134233279\":true,\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Build trust<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. When we describe features from the perspective of how they benefit customers and what will happen when\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">customers<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0take\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a specific<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">action, we<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0help<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0build trust and confidence.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"134233279\":true,\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Support and convey our brand<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Language that reflects the brand voice feels consistent and reassures the customer. Conversely, off-brand language\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">or inconsistent terminology\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">creates dissonance and erodes trust<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and the customer\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0confidence\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">level and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0can even make users feel unsure or anxious.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0When customers trust us, they tend to be more loyal to our brand and products, and more likely to recommend Microsoft to others.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"134233279\":true,\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">W<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e used a combination\u00a0of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">research<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0techniques<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, such as card sorting, tree testing, surveys, benchmark studies, 1:1\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">interviews<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and focus groups<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. By combining these methods<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, we\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">gained\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">better understand<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">these users\u2019\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">mental models, information categorization patterns, and language preferences in relation to top tasks within<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Settings<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Billing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">sections<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the admin center.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Testing for true understanding<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Interestingly, while\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the majority of the VSB participants claimed they understood the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">terms<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in question<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">some<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the definitions they provided lacked clarity or specificity<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ma<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">de<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0it hard to assess whether these participants\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">truly\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">understood<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the terms.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">These will\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">merit<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0further study.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For example, w<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e hypothesized<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">test\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">participants<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0would not understand the term \u201cdomain<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cDomain\u201d has been a term of special concern across our design and product management team, as we know there\u2019s drop-off in domain-related task steps.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">T<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">esters<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0surprised us by\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">stating they<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019re\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">familiar\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">with<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0have<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0a solid grasp o<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0concept.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">However,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">when we asked participants to define the term, many were imprecise and not entirely accurate. This signals to us that,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> even though they have some knowledge about domains, it may not be enough to give them confidence when <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">completing domain-related tasks in the admin center<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. There<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">fore,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in the UX,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">we need to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">provide examples of what a domain looks like<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, define the term<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in a tooltip, and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ensure the visual and content design<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in the admin center<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0do all\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">they<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0can to boost user confidence as they complete domain-related tasks, such as creating their username<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Conversely<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">term that was unfamiliar to most participants was &#8220;seats<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a term we\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">have<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0use<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to denote the number of people who are licensed to use\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a product.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Notably, its synonym &#8220;licenses&#8221; was a term that <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">most<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> participants said they understood, but several commented that they believed a license was required for each device; <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">when in reality<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">each<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0user\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">gets a license<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0that they can use\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">on multiple devices.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Based on that, the product should use the term \u201clicense\u201d instead of \u201cseat\u201d in product sign-ups and other experiences targeting VSB customers<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and we<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0should also clearly explain that one license is needed for each user, and that each user can use the app on as many devices as they wish.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW69545375 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW69545375 BCX8\">Finding an appropriate term for\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW69545375 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun ContextualSpellingAndGrammarErrorV2 SCXW69545375 BCX8\">the purchasing<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW69545375 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW69545375 BCX8\">\u00a0space within the admin\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW69545375 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun ContextualSpellingAndGrammarErrorV2 SCXW69545375 BCX8\">center<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW69545375 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW69545375 BCX8\">\u00a0was another area we examined. We found that\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW69545375 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW69545375 BCX8\">participants<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW69545375 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW69545375 BCX8\"> preferred the term \u201cMarketplace<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW69545375 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW69545375 BCX8\">\u201d<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW69545375 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW69545375 BCX8\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW69545375 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW69545375 BCX8\">o<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW69545375 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW69545375 BCX8\">ver \u201cPurchase services\u201d (the current name), Purchasing, or Shopping.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW69545375 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW69545375 BCX8\">\u201cMarketplace\u201d was\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW69545375 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW69545375 BCX8\">favored almost 5 times more than the next-most popular option<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW69545375 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW69545375 BCX8\">, which was surprising to our feature team.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW69545375 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW69545375 BCX8\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW69545375 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW69545375 BCX8\">We&#8217;ve run additional testing showing that some users think that you only need one license for your whole organization. So, there&#8217;s lots of confusion about how licenses are assigned. In this case, the entry point for m<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">anaging third<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8211;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">party app settings had been the subject of some debate. The parties that were\u00a0disagreeing\u00a0collaborated on a list of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">naming options<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0which my team\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">then\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">tested<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0with<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">users. The name \u201cintegrated apps\u201d was the clear winner, resolving the conflict and providing a naming option that we knew would resonate with our audience.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In another example, the team updating the billing interface wanted to use the term \u201cInventory\u201d for the area of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">dmin\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">enter where customers manage the apps they have<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Our research revealed that this was the single most confusing term\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">tested<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. What term did customers prefer? \u201cMy products.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We used the recommendations from the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">information architect<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">u<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">re (<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">IA<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0study to inform our navigation naming principles and help drive customer-informed discussions about navigation naming.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">M<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">icrosoft\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">365\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">dmin\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">enter has many facets, and we\u2019ll need<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0more research to uncover\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">whether<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">our<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">users are truly as familiar with the terms as they claimed to be, or if there are other areas where\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">changes in\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">word choice and clarification<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0can help avoid confusion.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ll continue to partner with our design<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, product management,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and engineering stakeholders to provide recommendations on optimizing the language\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to improve\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the customer<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0experience<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong class=\"\">Did this article give you ideas on how language can improve your customers&#8217; experience?
