However, not all designs or prototypes are ready\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">for\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">or deserve to be put in front of our customers. In fact, many problems with<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">an<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">experience<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0can be uncovered by running a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">heuristic<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0evaluation or conducting an experience review, as has been\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">covered<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/newed.any0.dpdns.org\/en-us\/research\/group\/customer-insights-research\/articles\/a-guide-to-conducting-experience-reviews\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">in this\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">previous<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0blog post<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":257}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">E<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">valuating a design against a chosen set of heuristics often help<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0scope and shape the focus of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a researcher\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">next steps. And in some cases, a \u201cheuristic-evaluation-first&#8221; approach <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">yields\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">feedback\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">that<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">convince<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">teams to re-work the designs before conducting studies with customers.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">But\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">w<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">hile<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">heuristic<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0evaluations\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">are less expensive<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">they\u2019re<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">typically\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">not as exciting to run as usability studies or interviews, and they\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">don\u2019t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0produce convincing videos for stakeholders.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":257}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">So, how\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">can we raise the stakes for\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">heuristic<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0evaluations<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0when should we?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":257}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-720568 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/newed.any0.dpdns.org\/en-us\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/envelope.jpg\" alt=\"envelope and letter\" width=\"96\" height=\"96\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newed.any0.dpdns.org\/en-us\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/envelope.jpg 96w, https:\/\/newed.any0.dpdns.org\/en-us\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/envelope-12x12.jpg 12w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 96px) 100vw, 96px\" \/>Bringing a remote team together\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":257}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The idea came when I was asked to test a set of customer journeys. Initially, I wanted to approach this\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">by<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0running<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0a quick\u00a0heuristic\u00a0evaluation before conducting a usability study. But with end-to-end journeys each spanning a multitude of pages, it would have been impractical for one person to tackle.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":257}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Instead, I decided to bring in in-house evaluators. At that time,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">my team members and I were<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0all working from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Had<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0we been<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in the office, we could book a conference room, bring in some lunch, and go over the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">UI<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Tenets and Traps cards together. But with everyone so busy and immersed in their work,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">needed to find a way to entice people to spend time on a\u00a0generally not-so-fun\u00a0activity.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":257}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-720571\" src=\"https:\/\/newed.any0.dpdns.org\/en-us\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/hat.jpg\" alt=\"party hat\" width=\"77\" height=\"98\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newed.any0.dpdns.org\/en-us\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/hat.jpg 77w, https:\/\/newed.any0.dpdns.org\/en-us\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/hat-9x12.jpg 9w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 77px) 100vw, 77px\" \/>It\u2019s\u00a0time for a\u00a0heuristic\u00a0evaluation\u00a0party<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":257}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">marketed the effort as a party and posted a call to sign up on our Teams channels, adding a fun gif to bring attention and lighten this\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">task.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Instead of inviting only expert evaluators, I <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">extended the invitation to everyone interested in helping and learning about this technique. I <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">used this as an opportunity to bring people together and help them meet someone new or someone they\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">had\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">never worked with before. It was a perfect way to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">get<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">our<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">colleagues\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">familiar<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0with this method, to grow the next generation of evaluators, and potentially to\u00a0offload\u00a0myself from this kind of research in the future.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For more about this, see<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0our prior blog post<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">:\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/newed.any0.dpdns.org\/en-us\/research\/group\/customer-insights-research\/articles\/give-your-research-skills-away-why-coaching-product-teams-wont-put-you-out-of-a-job\/\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Give your research skills away: Why coaching product teams won\u2019t put you out of a job.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">As a result, a multi-disciplinary team of researchers,\u00a0UX\u00a0writers, and designers joined our parties.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">To<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">maintain\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">party theme<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, I <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">assigned my colleagues to groups based on musical instruments e.g., guitar, piano, etc. I <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">paired people who were familiar with heuristics and people who were using them for the first time.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":257}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Aside from the agenda, each party opened with a customer quote and a video recording from one of the relevant studies. Then I <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">introduced the method, heuristics, or\u00a0rather\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">UI\u00a0and UX tenets and traps<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and our reasons for choosing them. I also had a demo-practice together before each pair left to an assigned Teams room to work on a specific part of the journey.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":257}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Each party guest had a set of heuristics to focus on and a reference card with questions to guide them through. The journeys we evaluated were put together in PowerPoint, so we used this medium for capturing issues. When someone\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">found<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0a problem, they would just add a shape or an icon to\u00a0indicate\u00a0the area of the problem on a page and attach a comment with an explanation.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":257}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When this effort was completed,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">we had<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">held six\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">one-hour\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">parties<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0with a total of twenty-seven participants. In that time, we covered a tremendous amount.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">knew that we would get a lot done, but\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">we<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0anticipate\u00a0it being this powerful at the outset.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":257}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-720574\" src=\"https:\/\/newed.any0.dpdns.org\/en-us\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/party-favor.jpg\" alt=\"party favor\" width=\"92\" height=\"93\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newed.any0.dpdns.org\/en-us\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/party-favor.jpg 92w, https:\/\/newed.any0.dpdns.org\/en-us\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/party-favor-12x12.jpg 12w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 92px) 100vw, 92px\" \/>When\u00a0to use\u00a0heuristic\u00a0evaluation parties<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":257}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As with traditional\u00a0heuristic\u00a0evaluation,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">your main goal is still to uncover potential problems with a design.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Similarly,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">you\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">may not<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0have access to\u00a0fast\u00a0unmoderated studies or\u00a0recruitment\u00a0budget<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. And finally, you notice that\u00a0at a glance<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the design\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">violates the best\u00a0practices\u00a0and you expect\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a usability study\u00a0won\u2019t\u00a0uncover any\u00a0new information<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">But there are some\u00a0additional\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">reasons for choosing a party format<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">You want to tea<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ch others how to run a\u00a0heuristic\u00a0evaluation and apply it to\u00a0the future\u00a0designs<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"134233279\":true,\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">You want to get a buy-in from your stakeholders<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0by having them go through evaluations.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"134233279\":true,\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Designs that you\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">are going to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">evaluate are too large to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">tackle<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">alon<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">or to get in front of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the customer.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">You want to expand your colleagues\u2019 focus beyond the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0area of their\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">specialization.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">You need\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to include multiple perspectives<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and look beyond the UI.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"134233279\":true,\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-720577\" src=\"https:\/\/newed.any0.dpdns.org\/en-us\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/balloons.jpg\" alt=\"balloons\" width=\"84\" height=\"101\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newed.any0.dpdns.org\/en-us\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/balloons.jpg 84w, https:\/\/newed.any0.dpdns.org\/en-us\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/balloons-10x12.jpg 10w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 84px) 100vw, 84px\" \/>Adapting your practice to your needs<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Researchers are\u00a0generally accustomed\u00a0to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">meeting<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0customers in person and collaborating with our teams in the office. In the face of an extended period of working from home, we can adapt our online tools and technologies to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">emulate some of the in-person constructs and bring back fun and a sense of team connection. It just\u00a0takes\u00a0some creativity!<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Our<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">first set of parties was lean. But you can take this idea even further<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and if\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">budget<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0allows you can order snacks or gift cards\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0your guests, use fun backgrounds during calls, set up music, create badges or certificates to acknowledge and thank people for the effort. There are so many ways to set a party mood and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">create\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a sense of community.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":257}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I hope that this post\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">has given you some ideas of how to innovate within your research practice or just within your team.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>What do you think?
