Does your product backlog feel endless? <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The first step to using an idea is knowing which idea to use<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. It is important to learn which ideas will bring the most value to your customers before choosing what to focus on. One method that can be used to help is called the Kano model.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What is the Kano model?<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Kano (pronounced \u201cKah-no\u201d) model is a theory for product development and customer satisfaction. This theory gets its name from Noriaki Kano who developed it in the 1980s. Kano believed in three fundamentals:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li data-leveltext=\"%1.\" data-font=\"Calibri\" data-listid=\"17\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Customer satisfaction<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> of a feature depends on the level of <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">functionality<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"%1.\" data-font=\"Calibri\" data-listid=\"17\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Customer loyalty is dependent on <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">five emotional response types:<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> must-be, performance, attractive, indifferent, and reverse.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"%1.\" data-font=\"Calibri\" data-listid=\"17\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Customer satisfaction with how someone feels about a feature can be measured in a <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">questionnaire<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335551550\":1,\"335551620\":1,\"335559685\":720,\"335559737\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259,\"335559991\":360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">To demonstrate the power of this quantitative methodology, we gathered some of the world\u2019s most popular and least popular foods. Surveying 20 people for demonstrative purposes, we learned which\u00a0foods provide people with the most satisfaction and which foods people could live without. The satisfaction scale goes from frustrated (no satisfaction) to delighted (high satisfaction). The functionality scale represents the level of functionality the customer thinks a feature provides. Imagine you have invented a new ice cream flavor that combines chocolate, caramel, and coconut. If it scored high using <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW99966827 BCX8\">this methodology <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW99966827 BCX8\">but does not taste good, it will not have as much value to customers once released. If we leave them out, our product will be considered bad or insufficient. These features should be prioritized first. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In our food survey, tomatoes were rated as a must-be. Tomatoes are a staple ingredient. They do not make people particularly happy but lacking them would make people very upset.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"%1.\" data-font=\"Calibri\" data-listid=\"14\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Performance, also known as one-dimensional:<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> These tend to have a direct impact on satisfaction <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">if<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> the functionality, performance, or in our example, \u2018<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">flavor\u2019 <\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">meets customer expectations! People like these features and would dislike not having them. These should be prioritized second, right after must-be features.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"%1.\" data-font=\"Calibri\" data-listid=\"14\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Attractive (sometimes called delighter): <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Features that are unexpected and cause a positive reaction. Over time, attractive features <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">can<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> become performance features as satisfaction settles and the loss if absent becomes greater. For example,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> when first invented, ice cream <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">may <\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">have been in the attractive category, shifting over time to the performance category as its novelty wore off.<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\"><br \/>\nAn important note: <\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Unlike our food survey example, Kano model results typically have many features in the attractive category. These features should be prioritized <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">after<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> must-be and performance features and <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">before<\/span><\/b> <span data-contrast=\"none\"><span data-contrast=\"none\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">indifferent features.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"%1.\" data-font=\"Calibri\" data-listid=\"14\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Indifferent: <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The presence (or absence) of these features<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> does not make a real difference to customer satisfaction with the product, no matter how much work we put into them.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"%1.\" data-font=\"Calibri\" data-listid=\"14\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Reverse (undesired): <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">These features lead to customer satisfaction by NOT being there. Do not build these ideas. If liver was a feature, do not build it!<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The questionnaire<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"134233117\":false,\"134233118\":false,\"201341983\":0,\"335551550\":1,\"335551620\":1,\"335559685\":0,\"335559737\":0,\"335559738\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Kano uses a two-question pairing with a five-point non-linear scale to reveal our customers\u2019 perceptions of the features. These can be presented using images, video, GIFs, or text descriptions. The two primary questions are:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li data-leveltext=\"%1.\" data-font=\"Calibri\" data-listid=\"5\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If you have (insert feature description here), how do you feel?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"%1.\" data-font=\"Calibri\" data-listid=\"5\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If you do <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">not <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">have (insert feature description here), how do you feel? <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Additionally, this two-question pairing helps with a frequent problem in research studies where people say they want everything.
