Travel route planning is an important step for a tourist
\nto prepare his\/her trip. As a common scenario, a tourist
\nusually asks the following questions when he\/she is planning
\nhis\/her trip in an unfamiliar place: 1) Are there any
\ntravel route suggestions for a one-day or three-day trip in
\nBeijing? 2) What is the most popular travel path within
\nthe Forbidden City? To facilitate a tourist\u2019s trip planning,
\nin this paper, we target at solving the problem of automatic
\ntravel route planning. We propose to leverage existing
\ntravel clues recovered from 20 million geo-tagged photos
\ncollected from www.panoramio.com to suggest customized
\ntravel route plans according to users\u2019 preferences. As the
\nfootprints of tourists at memorable destinations, the geotagged
\nphotos could be naturally used to discover the travel
\npaths within a destination (attractions\/landmarks) and travel
\nroutes between destinations. Based on the information discovered
\nfrom geo-tagged photos, we can provide a customized
\ntrip plan for a tourist, i.e., the popular destinations to visit,
\nthe visiting order of destinations, the time arrangement in
\neach destination, and the typical travel path within each
\ndestination. Users are also enabled to specify personal preference
\nsuch as visiting location, visiting time\/season, travel
\nduration, and destination style in an interactive manner to
\nguide the system. Owning to 20 million geo-tagged photos
\nand 200; 000 travelogues, an online system has been developed
\nto help users plan travel routes for over 30; 000 attractions\/
\nlandmarks in more than 100 countries and territories.
\nExperimental results show the intelligence and effectiveness
