We measure the general scaling laws relating the particle-loss and heating rates to the temperature, scattering length, and atom number. Both at unitarity and for positive <span class=\"aps-inline-formula\"><span id=\"MathJax-Element-4-Frame\" class=\"mjx-chtml MathJax_CHTML\"><span id=\"MJXc-Node-12\" class=\"mjx-math\"><span id=\"MJXc-Node-13\" class=\"mjx-mrow\"><span id=\"MJXc-Node-14\" class=\"mjx-mi\"><span class=\"mjx-char MJXc-TeX-math-I\">a<\/span><\/span><span id=\"MJXc-Node-15\" class=\"mjx-mo MJXc-space3\"><span class=\"mjx-char MJXc-TeX-main-R\">\u226a<\/span><\/span><span id=\"MJXc-Node-16\" class=\"mjx-mi MJXc-space3\"><span class=\"mjx-char MJXc-TeX-math-I\">\u03bb<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> <\/span> we find agreement with three-body theory. However, for <span class=\"aps-inline-formula\"><span id=\"MathJax-Element-5-Frame\" class=\"mjx-chtml MathJax_CHTML\"><span id=\"MJXc-Node-17\" class=\"mjx-math\"><span id=\"MJXc-Node-18\" class=\"mjx-mrow\"><span id=\"MJXc-Node-19\" class=\"mjx-mi\"><span class=\"mjx-char MJXc-TeX-math-I\">a<\/span><\/span><span id=\"MJXc-Node-20\" class=\"mjx-mo MJXc-space3\"><span class=\"mjx-char MJXc-TeX-main-R\"><<\/span><\/span><span id=\"MJXc-Node-21\" class=\"mjx-mn MJXc-space3\"><span class=\"mjx-char MJXc-TeX-main-R\">0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> <\/span> and away from unitarity, we observe significant four-body decay. At unitarity, the three-body loss coefficient, <span class=\"aps-inline-formula\"><span id=\"MathJax-Element-6-Frame\" class=\"mjx-chtml MathJax_CHTML\"><span id=\"MJXc-Node-22\" class=\"mjx-math\"><span id=\"MJXc-Node-23\" class=\"mjx-mrow\"><span id=\"MJXc-Node-24\" class=\"mjx-msub\"><span class=\"mjx-base\"><span id=\"MJXc-Node-25\" class=\"mjx-mi\"><span class=\"mjx-char MJXc-TeX-math-I\">L<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"mjx-sub\"><span id=\"MJXc-Node-26\" class=\"mjx-mn\"><span class=\"mjx-char MJXc-TeX-main-R\">3<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span id=\"MJXc-Node-27\" class=\"mjx-mo MJXc-space3\"><span class=\"mjx-char MJXc-TeX-main-R\">\u221d<\/span><\/span><span id=\"MJXc-Node-28\" class=\"mjx-msup MJXc-space3\"><span class=\"mjx-base\"><span id=\"MJXc-Node-29\" class=\"mjx-mi\"><span class=\"mjx-char MJXc-TeX-math-I\">\u03bb^<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"mjx-sup\"><span id=\"MJXc-Node-30\" class=\"mjx-mn\"><span class=\"mjx-char MJXc-TeX-main-R\">4<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> <\/span>, is 3 times lower than the universal theoretical upper bound. This reduction is a consequence of species-specific Efimov physics and makes <span class=\"aps-inline-formula\"><span id=\"MathJax-Element-7-Frame\" class=\"mjx-chtml MathJax_CHTML\"><span id=\"MJXc-Node-31\" class=\"mjx-math\"><span id=\"MJXc-Node-32\" class=\"mjx-mrow\"><span id=\"MJXc-Node-33\" class=\"mjx-mmultiscripts\"><span class=\"mjx-presup\"><span id=\"MJXc-Node-35\" class=\"mjx-mn\"><span class=\"mjx-char MJXc-TeX-main-R\">39<\/span><\/span><\/span><span id=\"MJXc-Node-34\" class=\"mjx-mi\"><span class=\"mjx-char MJXc-TeX-main-R\">K<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> <\/span> particularly promising for studies of many-body physics in a unitary Bose gas.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We study the stability of a thermal 39K Bose gas across a broad Feshbach resonance, focusing on the unitary regime, where the scattering length a exceeds the thermal wavelength \u03bb .
