AI Built for Work

Microsoft 365 Copilot vs. Claude Enterprise: Not all AI is built for work

Two AI tools. Same prompts. See how Microsoft 365 Copilot, powered by Work IQ, compares to Claude Enterprise with their Microsoft 365 connector—and why Copilot is the right choice for work.

Copilot Cowork runs in a protected cloud environment. Claude Cowork doesn’t.

Copilot Cowork completes multi-step workflows across Microsoft 365 apps and within Microsoft 365 security and governance boundaries. Claude Cowork created local files, introducing security risks and version sprawl, and did not complete requested actions in Outlook and Teams.1

Copilot helps prevent data leaks before they start. Claude doesn’t.

Copilot enforces enterprise protections to proactively prevent data loss and reduce oversharing. Claude did not enforce Microsoft Purview policies and exposed confidential information.2

Copilot works in Microsoft Teams. Claude doesn’t.

Copilot in Teams automatically generates intelligent meeting recaps so decisions, owners, and next steps are always clear. Claude did not work in Teams and did not locate the transcript to recap the meeting.3

Copilot in Excel builds accurate analysis and outputs with Work IQ. Claude doesn’t.

Copilot in Excel uses the right data and generates accurate analysis and outputs such as pivot tables, while respecting enterprise protections. Claude for Excel add-in did not find the document needed for the analysis, did not generate a pivot table, and did not apply protections.4

Copilot in PowerPoint creates business-ready decks from your templates. Claude doesn’t.

Copilot in PowerPoint uses Work IQ to pull in the right content and build slides in your branded template with protections applied. Claude for PowerPoint add-in did not find the content, did not use the organization's template, and did not retain protections.5

Copilot in Word creates accurate and protected documents with Work IQ. Claude doesn’t.

Copilot in Word uses the right content to update documents accurately while respecting protections. Claude for Word add-in inferred information incorrectly and did not apply protections.6

Frequently asked questions

  • Microsoft 365 Copilot is a complete AI system for work. Built on Work IQ, Copilot understands organizational context to provide more accurate, trusted, and relevant answers and can infer or use explicit grounding.  The native app integration with Microsoft Teams and Microsoft 365 apps generates content that is shareable and editable. Built for collaboration, there is a single version of the asset stored in the company’s knowledge base.

Claude Enterprise operates through a separate user experience. There are collaboration limitations with asset creation, and Claude offers limited pre-built connectors and relies on explicit grounding to retrieve information from your Microsoft 365 apps and other company data.
  • Copilot Cowork brings long-running, multistep work into Microsoft 365 Copilot. Instead of asking Copilot to generate a single artifact, Cowork can break down complex requests into steps, reason across tools and files, and, with observable work and transparent actions, enable progress to be reviewed, guided, or stopped. When combined with Anthropic’s agentic model for multi-step tasks, Copilot Cowork delivers a managed, enterprise-grade experience that pairs powerful reasoning with enterprise controls.
  • Copilot Cowork, currently available in the Frontier program, uses Work IQ to continuously synthesize signals across Microsoft 365. This additional contextual awareness across meetings, emails, chats, documents, metadata, and people can provide a more complete understanding of your company and workflows. It runs cloud-native inside Microsoft 365 apps and executes directly within the apps. Copilot Cowork is enterprise‑ready, fully integrated with Microsoft Purview, and available across all Microsoft 365 apps and devices, delivering productivity without compromising compliance, governance, or manageability.

Claude Cowork is currently available only via desktop app, operates on files stored locally on a user’s machine, with outputs also saved locally.
  • Microsoft 365 Copilot inherits Microsoft 365 security, permissions, data loss prevention, auditing, and other compliance controls. Customer data is protected by Enterprise Data Protection (EDP) and subject to existing Microsoft 365 residency, retention, and governance policies.

Claude does not provide the same tenant-level enforcement as Microsoft 365. Add-ins can introduce protection risks and compliance gaps with the add-ins, as they are reliant on Anthropic's own policies rather than the Microsoft Data Protection Addendum (DPA).
  • Microsoft EDP applies to the use of Anthropic as a subprocessor. Unless otherwise disclosed in the terms of use in the Microsoft 365 admin center or product documentation, the Microsoft Data Protection Addendum (DPA) and product terms also apply.

Exception: Anthropic models deployed and enabled in Microsoft 365 Copilot, Researcher, and Copilot Studio are currently excluded from the EU Data Boundary (similar to Anthropic). When available, in-country large language model (LLM) processing commitments apply.
  • Copilot’s differentiators are that it’s grounded in your work (Work IQ), built directly into the Microsoft 365 apps people already use, and applies changes in the file so they’re transparent and reviewable. It's easy to access within the canvas and app you are already working in, built for collaboration with a shared version in OneDrive and SharePoint, and all of this occurs with enterprise-grade security and compliance through existing Microsoft 365 permissions and protections.
  • Microsoft 365 Copilot goes beyond AI chat. It is designed as an end‑to‑end AI solution that works across Microsoft 365 apps, grounds responses in real work contexts using Work IQ, and comes with agents to automate tasks and business processes. Copilot offers multi-model choice with the latest AI models from OpenAI and Anthropic along with admin controls, audit logging, and compliance support—meeting enterprise requirements by design, not as an afterthought.
  • Microsoft 365 Copilot follows the Microsoft responsible AI principles and uses your organization’s existing identity, compliance, and encryption controls. It doesn’t train on your data, and interactions remain within your Microsoft 365 tenant—helping you work confidently with sensitive information.
